How can phone charging stations help hospital staff and visitors?

Hospital phone charging stations are now regarded as an essential amenity and not just a “nice-to-have” luxury.

NZ hospitals, health care centres and hospital charities are increasingly turning to phone charging stations and power banks to address critical pain points for hospital users and medical staff alike.

Phone charging services are a great revenue-raiser for DHBs and hospital charities. ChargedAs shares revenue on phone charging stations with all New Zealand hospital partners as part of our “support local” program.

Stations can be branded, increasing visibility for fundraising efforts.

Charged phones crush low-battery anxiety

Phone charging services serve as a crucial tool during high-stress situations for visitors and ensure they don’t experience low-battery anxiety on top of everything else.

Charged phones help keep patients connected with their whanau and support networks and they ensure hospital visitors can play games, videos, music or use social media while waiting to be seen.

Many patients store medical details including medication history and medication lists on their phones, so they can always access this when speaking to doctors if their phone’s charged.

Hospitals with phone charging stations and power banks are also a great help to families and friends who may spend a long and uncertain amount of time in waiting rooms or at their loved one’s hospital bedside.

Visitors are often the main contact point for a patient’s whanau, so they can provide status updates and visitor hours without the worry of their phone battery going flat.

Staff can get on with their jobs

Phone charging services enable health workers to get on with their jobs instead of being distracted by phone charging requests.

study found there was an 80% reduction in patients requesting phone charging after a ChargeBox was set up in one hospital.

The study also found aggressive behaviour from visitors dropped by 75%, and the hospital saw a 42.5% fall in patients self-discharging due to a dead battery.

No more “socket scavenging”

Phone charging stations are a particularly popular option in hospitals because they ensure phones can be safely locked away during procedures.

They also prevent “socket scavenging,” where people who are desperate to charge their phones unplug equipment.

Some clients have told us they turned to ChargedAs over trip hazard concerns, whereby people sit on the floor to charge their phones.
