Terms & Conditions for Volty
Terms for renting Volty power banks through the Volty app.
Last updated: 30 August 2026
These Terms & Conditions apply when you use the Volty app to rent a Volty power bank from ChargedAs Limited ("ChargedAs", "we", "our" or "us").
Please read these terms before renting a Volty power bank through the app. By starting a rental, you agree to these terms.
Nothing in these terms limits any rights or remedies you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, Fair Trading Act 1986 or other New Zealand law that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
1. About Volty
Volty is a portable power bank rental service operated by ChargedAs Limited in New Zealand.
Using the Volty app, you can rent a portable power bank from a Volty station, take it with you while you charge your device and return it to a compatible Volty station.
Availability of power banks and empty return slots varies by location and cannot be guaranteed.
2. Volty accounts
You need a Volty account to rent a power bank through the Volty app.
When creating or using an account, you must provide accurate and current information.
You are responsible for taking reasonable steps to keep your login details secure. Please contact us promptly if you believe someone has accessed or used your account without your permission.
You must not deliberately use another person's account or payment method without their permission.
We may suspend or restrict an account where we reasonably believe this is necessary because of fraud, misuse, a security issue, unpaid charges or a material breach of these terms. Where reasonably practicable, we will explain the reason and give you an opportunity to resolve the issue.
3. Renting a Volty power bank
Your rental begins when a Volty power bank is released to you by a station through the Volty app.
You are responsible for taking reasonable care of the power bank during your rental.
You must not deliberately:
- damage, dismantle, alter or tamper with a Volty power bank or station;
- remove or deface identifying labels;
- attempt to interfere with the operation or security of the Volty service;
- use the equipment for an unlawful purpose; or
- attempt to repair or modify a power bank yourself.
Normal wear and tear from ordinary use is not your responsibility.
4. Rental prices
Volty app-member pricing starts at $3.50 per hour and is capped at $15 per day.
The first three minutes of every rental are free. This allows you to return a power bank promptly if, for example, you discover that it is unsuitable or not functioning properly.
If a Volty power bank is not returned within three days, a $45 replacement charge applies and the power bank becomes yours to keep.
All prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST where applicable.
The applicable price will be displayed before you start your rental.
5. Changes to prices
We may change Volty rental prices from time to time.
Any new price will be displayed before a new rental begins and will apply only to rentals started after that price takes effect.
We will not retrospectively change the price of a rental you have already started.
6. Payments
Payments for Volty app rentals are processed by Stripe, our third-party payment processor.
Your payment card details are entered into Stripe's payment system for processing. ChargedAs does not store your full payment card details.
You must be authorised to use the payment method registered to your Volty account.
You authorise Stripe to process charges properly incurred under your rental in accordance with the pricing disclosed to you before the rental begins.
A temporary payment authorisation or verification may appear on your account where required by the payment system. A temporary authorisation is not necessarily a completed charge, and its release may depend on your bank or payment provider.
7. Returning your Volty
You can return your Volty power bank to a compatible Volty station with an available return slot.
Your rental ends when the station successfully registers the return.
Please make sure the power bank has been properly inserted and accepted by the station before leaving it.
If you have difficulty returning a power bank because a station is full, unavailable or malfunctioning, try another compatible Volty station where reasonably practicable or contact ChargedAs for assistance.
We will deal reasonably with charges resulting from a verified fault with our equipment or service that prevented you from returning a power bank.
8. Power banks not returned within three days
If you do not return a Volty within three days of starting the rental, the $45 replacement charge applies and the power bank becomes yours to keep.
Once the replacement charge has been applied and the power bank has become yours, you are not required to return it.
If you believe the charge resulted from an error, equipment fault or other circumstance outside your reasonable control, please contact us so we can investigate.
9. Lost, stolen or damaged power banks
Please contact ChargedAs as soon as reasonably practicable if a rented power bank is lost, stolen or materially damaged.
You will not be charged for ordinary wear and tear.
Where a power bank is deliberately or negligently damaged while in your possession, we may seek to recover our reasonable loss to the extent permitted by law.
We will not hold you responsible for damage caused by an existing defect, normal use or circumstances for which you are not reasonably responsible.
10. Faulty or unsafe power banks
Do not continue using a power bank if it appears damaged, unusually hot, swollen, leaking or otherwise unsafe.
Disconnect it from your device and contact ChargedAs.
If a power bank does not work properly, you can return it within the first three minutes without a rental charge.
Nothing in this section limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
11. Safe use
Volty power banks contain lithium-ion batteries and should be used with reasonable care.
You must not deliberately puncture, crush, expose to excessive heat or flame, immerse in water, dismantle or otherwise misuse a power bank.
Follow any safety instructions displayed on the power bank, station or Volty app.
ChargedAs is not responsible for loss caused by your deliberate misuse of a power bank to the extent permitted by law.
12. Service availability
We aim to keep Volty stations, power banks and the Volty app available and operational, but individual stations, power banks, network connections, payment systems or app services may occasionally be unavailable.
The app may display station information, but availability can change before you arrive.
Nothing in this section excludes any statutory guarantee that applies under New Zealand law.
13. Refunds and disputed charges
If you believe you have been charged incorrectly, please contact ChargedAs at info@chargedas.co.nz and provide enough information for us to identify and investigate the rental.
We will investigate disputed charges reasonably and correct or refund charges where appropriate.
Nothing in these terms imposes a deadline that removes a right or remedy you otherwise have under New Zealand law.
14. Consumer rights and our responsibility
Our goods and services come with rights and guarantees under New Zealand law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and Fair Trading Act 1986.
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies those rights where the law does not permit us to do so.
To the extent permitted by law, ChargedAs is not responsible for loss that results from:
- your deliberate misuse of a power bank or the Volty service;
- your material breach of these terms;
- unauthorised modifications or repairs to a power bank; or
- events outside our reasonable control where we could not reasonably have prevented the loss.
This does not exclude liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including your rights and remedies under applicable consumer law.
15. Privacy
ChargedAs handles personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 and our ChargedAs and Volty Privacy Policy.
When you use a Volty account, we may collect information such as your name, email address, mobile number, account information and rental and transaction history.
Payments made through the Volty app are processed by Stripe. ChargedAs does not store your full payment card details.
Please read our ChargedAs and Volty Privacy Policy for information about what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, third-party service providers, overseas processing and your privacy rights.
16. Intellectual property
The Volty and ChargedAs names, branding, website and app content and other intellectual property belong to ChargedAs or their respective owners or licensors.
You may use the Volty app and related services for their intended personal use.
You must not copy, modify, reproduce or commercially exploit our intellectual property except where permitted by law or with our permission.
17. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms & Conditions where reasonably necessary, including to reflect changes to the Volty service, technology, pricing or legal obligations.
Changes will apply prospectively.
Where a change materially affects existing users' rights or obligations, we will take reasonable steps to bring the change to their attention before it takes effect where appropriate.
Changes will not retrospectively alter the price or other material terms of a rental that has already begun.
18. Ending or suspending the service
You can stop using Volty at any time, subject to completing and paying for any rental already underway.
We may suspend or terminate access to an account where reasonably necessary because of fraud, misuse, a security issue, unpaid amounts or a material breach of these terms.
Any suspension or termination does not remove rights or obligations that arose before it occurred.
19. New Zealand law
These Terms & Conditions are governed by New Zealand law.
Nothing in these terms prevents you from exercising rights available under New Zealand law, including taking an eligible dispute to the Disputes Tribunal or contacting an appropriate regulator or consumer-protection body.
